Dealer finance vs using Zooma

Taking finance at the point of sale means one rate from one source. Zooma flips that. One application, one soft check, assessed and matched across the full panel of vessel finance lenders.

Dealer finance

Taking the rate offered at the point of sale

  • One rate from one source, take it or leave it
  • Dealer finance often carries a commission that lifts the rate
  • Pressure to sign on the day, with little time to compare
  • Private sales usually aren't covered by dealer finance at all
  • No easy way to know if the rate is competitive

Who can apply

Do you qualify for a boat or jetski loan?

Zooma suits employed New Zealanders with a stable income and a good credit record. If that sounds like you, here is what lenders on our panel look for.

  • 18 or over and a NZ citizen, resident or eligible visa holder Work visa holders can apply with 13 or more months remaining on the visa.
  • Regular income you can show Employed, self-employed or a mix. Lenders want to see you can comfortably meet repayments.
  • A good credit history It doesn't need to be perfect, but lenders on our panel do look for a solid track record.
  • A vessel to finance New or used, dealer or private sale. Loan amounts from $3,000 to $250,000 over 6 to 84 months.
We can't help everyone. We don't accept applications from people on a benefit or WINZ support, in financial hardship, or seeking a payday loan.
We run a soft credit check during our assessment. This does not affect your score. Once matched, some lenders accept our check while others may run their own.

The guide

Boat and jetski loans in NZ: what to know before you borrow

Getting on the water is a big purchase, and how you finance it makes a real difference to what you end up paying. The rate you're offered, whether the loan is secured against the vessel, and where you arrange finance all matter. Here's how it works in NZ.

What are boat and jetski loan rates in NZ?

Vessel finance rates in NZ generally range from 8.99% to 29.95% p.a. (AIR). The lowest rates go to applicants with strong credit profiles, usually on secured loans where the vessel acts as collateral. The rate you're actually offered depends on your credit profile, the loan amount, the term and whether the loan is secured. Treat advertised numbers as a starting point, not a promise.

Comparing the full cost of an offer, not just the headline rate, is what protects you.

Secured vs unsecured: what's the difference?

A secured vessel loan is backed by the boat or jetski itself. Because the lender has security, the rate is typically lower and you may be able to borrow more. An unsecured loan isn't tied to the asset, so it carries a higher rate to reflect the added risk. Unsecured personal loans are the fastest option with no valuation required, while a secured loan can bring your rate down on a larger purchase. Make sure you understand what's at stake if repayments aren't met.

Soft check first, no score impact When you apply through Zooma, we run a soft credit check to assess your options. This does not affect your score. Once matched, some lenders accept our check while others may run their own.

Should I use dealer finance or a matching service?

Dealer finance offered at the point of sale is convenient, but like car dealer finance it often carries a commission that results in a higher rate than you would get through an independent broker. Private sales, common for boats on Trade Me, usually aren't covered by dealer finance at all. Zooma flips that: one application, one soft credit check, and access to multiple vetted NZ lenders. We assess your situation and match you to the lender best suited to finance your vessel.

Should you get pre-approved before buying?

Getting pre-approved before you start shopping puts you in a stronger position. You know your exact budget before you negotiate, you can move quickly when the right vessel comes up, which matters most for private sales, and you're not dependent on whatever rate the dealer offers on the day. Pre-approval through Zooma takes about 5 minutes, uses a soft credit check with no score impact, and carries no obligation to proceed.

How much does it cost to use Zooma?

If your loan is funded, a broker and introducer fee of up to $1,500 (GST inclusive) applies. Lender establishment fees of up to $450 may also apply, depending on the lender. Every fee is disclosed to you before you commit, so there are no surprises. We only get paid when your loan goes ahead, which keeps our interest aligned with finding you a deal worth taking. There are no upfront fees to apply.

What protections do I have as a borrower?

Lenders in NZ are bound by the responsible lending principles in the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003. Section 9C sets out the lender responsibility principles, including making reasonable inquiries so the loan meets your requirements and that you can repay without substantial hardship. The Commerce Commission enforces these rules. For independent, government-backed guidance on borrowing, Sorted is a good place to start.
