How the soft credit check works

We run a soft credit check during our assessment. This does not affect your score. Once matched, some lenders accept our check while others may run their own. We match you to the single most suitable lender for your circumstances, not just the lowest headline rate.

Applying direct vs using Zooma

Going direct to a lender means one application, one lender, one hard credit check. Zooma flips that. One application, one soft check, assessed and matched across the full panel.

Apply direct

Approaching one lender at a time

  • One application gets you one lender's offer, take it or leave it
  • Each application triggers a hard credit check that sits on your file
  • Multiple applications in a short window can pull your credit score down
  • No easy way to know which lender suits your situation best
  • Specialist lenders often aren't accessible direct to consumers

Who We Help

Who can apply through Zooma?

Zooma suits employed New Zealanders with a good credit history. If that sounds like you, here is what lenders on our panel look for.

You are employed with regular verifiable income

Full-time, part-time or self-employed income you can show through payslips or bank statements. A stable income history is the single most important factor lenders look for.

NZ citizen, resident or eligible visa holder

NZ citizens and permanent residents are welcome. Open and employer-specific work visas with at least 13 months remaining are also accepted.

You have a good credit history

It doesn't need to be perfect, but lenders look for a solid track record. Not sure where you stand? Apply and we'll assess your situation before approaching any lender.

You have a NZ bank account and need $1,000 to $250,000

We match loans across terms of 6 to 84 months. The right lender depends on loan size, purpose and your overall financial picture.

We don't accept applications from people on a benefit or WINZ support, in financial hardship, or seeking a payday loan.

What to have ready
1
NZ driver licence or passport
2

Personal loans in New Zealand: what to know before you apply

Personal loans NZ are one of the simplest ways to fund a big purchase, consolidate debt or cover an unexpected cost. But the rate you're offered, whether the loan is secured, and how you apply all make a real difference to what you end up paying. Here's how it works in NZ.

What are loan rates in New Zealand?

Rates in NZ generally range from 8.99% to 29.95% p.a. (AIR). The lowest rates go to applicants with strong credit profiles on secured loans. Secured loans start from 8.99% p.a. and unsecured from 10.99% p.a. The rate you're actually offered depends on your credit profile, the loan amount, the term and whether you offer security. Nobody is guaranteed the headline rate, so treat advertised numbers as a starting point, not a promise.

Comparing the full cost of an offer, not just the headline rate, is what protects you.

Secured vs unsecured: what's the difference?

A secured loan is backed by an asset, usually a vehicle. Because the lender has security, the rate is typically lower and you may be able to borrow more. An unsecured loan isn't tied to an asset, so it carries a higher rate to reflect the added risk to the lender. If you have an asset you're comfortable using as security, a secured loan can bring your rate down, but make sure you understand what's at stake if repayments aren't met.

Soft check first, no score impact When you apply through Zooma, we run a soft credit check to assess your options. This does not affect your score. Once matched, some lenders accept our check while others may run their own.

Should I apply direct or use a matching service?

Applying direct means approaching one lender at a time, and each application usually triggers a hard credit check that sits on your file. Several hard checks in a short window can pull your score down. Zooma flips that: one application, one soft credit check, and access to multiple vetted NZ lenders. We assess your situation and match you to the single most suitable lender, rather than you guessing which one to try first.

How much does it cost to use Zooma?

If your loan is funded, a broker and introducer fee of up to $1,500 (GST inclusive) applies. Lender establishment fees of up to $450 may also apply, depending on the lender. Every fee is disclosed to you before you commit, so there are no surprises. We only get paid when your loan goes ahead, which keeps our interest aligned with finding you a deal worth taking.

Borrow only what you can repay A longer term lowers your monthly repayment but increases the total interest you pay. Always check the total cost over the life of the loan, not just the monthly figure, before you sign.

Will applying affect my credit score?

No. Our initial assessment uses a soft credit check, which does not affect your credit score. Once matched, some lenders accept our check while others may run their own standard check as part of their process. This is one of the main advantages of going through a matching service rather than applying to several lenders directly and collecting a hard check from each one. You can read more about how credit reporting works through bureaus like Centrix.

What protections do I have as a borrower?

Lenders in NZ are bound by the responsible lending principles in the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003. Section 9C sets out the lender responsibility principles, including making reasonable inquiries so the loan meets your requirements and that you can repay without substantial hardship. The Commerce Commission enforces these rules, and the Financial Markets Authority oversees financial services more broadly. For independent, government-backed guidance on borrowing, Sorted is a good place to start.

Still not sure? Talk to our team

What is Zooma and how does it work?+

Zooma is a loan matching service operated by Lending Room Limited (FSP486566), an FSPR-registered NZ operator. Rather than lending money ourselves, we assess your application and match you to the single most suitable lender from a panel of multiple vetted NZ lenders. You fill in one form, we run a soft credit check during our assessment, then we connect you with the lender most suited to your circumstances.

Is Zooma a lender or a matching service?+

Zooma is a loan matching service, not a lender. We are operated by Lending Room Limited (FSP486566), an FSPR-registered NZ operator. We do not lend money ourselves. We match your application to the single most suitable lender from a panel of multiple vetted NZ lenders.

What is the difference between a secured and unsecured loan?+

A secured loan is backed by an asset such as a vehicle, which usually means a lower rate and the ability to borrow more. An unsecured loan is not tied to an asset, so it carries a higher rate to reflect the added risk to the lender. Secured loans start from 8.99% p.a. and unsecured from 10.99% p.a. (AIR).

Will applying affect my credit score?+

We run a soft credit check during our assessment. This does not affect your score. Once matched, some lenders accept our check while others may run their own. This is a key advantage of using a matching service instead of applying to several lenders directly and collecting a hard check from each one.

How much can I borrow?+

You can apply to borrow from $1,000 to $250,000 over a term of 6 to 84 months. The amount you are approved for depends on your income, expenses, credit profile and whether the loan is secured.

What interest rates are available?+

Rates on our panel start from 8.99% p.a. (AIR) for secured loans and 10.99% p.a. for unsecured, and go up to 29.95% p.a. depending on your credit profile, loan amount, term and the specific lender. We work to match you to the single most suitable lender for your situation.

How quickly will I hear back?+

Most applicants get a same-day assessment on business days. Same-day funding is possible when you are approved and your full application, including bank statements, is in by 12pm and approved by 3pm on a business day. The application itself takes about 5 minutes.

How much does it cost to use Zooma?+

If your loan is funded, a broker and introducer fee of up to $1,500 (GST inclusive) applies. Lender establishment fees of up to $450 may also apply, depending on the lender. Every fee is disclosed to you before you commit. There are no upfront fees to apply and we only get paid when your loan goes ahead.

Can I apply on a work visa?+

Yes. We accept open and employer-specific work visas with at least 13 months remaining, provided you have a regular NZ-based income and a good credit history.

What if I have already been declined by my bank?+

A decline from your bank does not mean you will not qualify elsewhere. Banks have strict criteria and do not always consider the full picture. We work with a range of lenders including specialist and non-bank lenders who may assess your application differently. It is worth applying to find out where you stand.

Who is not eligible to apply?+

We don't accept applications from people on a benefit or WINZ support, in financial hardship, or seeking a payday loan. To apply you generally need to be 18 or over, a NZ citizen, resident or eligible visa holder, with regular income and a good credit history.
